About Us...

The two Departments of Mathematics & Statistics and Computing offer programmes of study in Mathematics, Statistics and Computing which are very highly rated by students. All our modules are offered through Distance Learning techniques, and are fully supported by local tutors. The Departments are also the focus for Research activity which is more fully described in the 'Our Research' section of this website.

We contribute Open Learning modules in these subjects to a range of 'Named' Undergraduate Degrees and MSc Programmes, as well as a number of Postgraduate Certificate and other qualifications. You will find these linked and described further elsewhere on this site - at the present time we have more than 80 modules either available to students now, or in development.

The Departments are based at the Walton Hall campus in Milton Keynes, and we have a team of Staff Tutors and Associate Lecturers in 13 Regional Centres around the UK who provide local support and teaching to students registered on our various modules and programmes.

At any one time, we have around 28,000 students registered on our Open Learning modules of whom about 3,500 are Postgraduates. We support about 1,000 of our students in Wales, around 2,500 in Scotland and 1,500 or so in Ireland, with the remainder spread through 10 broad regions in England. We also work in partnership in a number of ways with educational and commercial organizations, the ones of most direct interest to students being our collaborations with the Arab Open University, SIM University (UniSIM) and the Hong Kong Open University.

The Departments are a constituent part of the Faculty of Mathematics, Computing and Technology which is is led by a Dean and Director of Studies, supported by 6 Associate Deans whose portfolios include the development of the Curriculum, the Production of modules, and the issues arising from Presentation of those modules to students, as well as Research..
